Updated 25 September 2026

Sometimes an email won't do. A landlord wants notice in writing, a company only takes complaints by post, or you just want your grandmother to open a real envelope. Better Letters lets you write a letter in your browser and have it printed, signed with your signature, put in an envelope and posted by Australia Post to any address in Australia. It costs $3.95, and you don't need a printer, stamps or an account.

Start writing your letter, or read on for how it works, what it costs and how long it takes.

How it works

  1. Write. Type your letter in the online editor, or start from a template. Add the recipient's name and postal address, and your own return address.
  2. Sign. Type your name and we render it in a handwriting-style script font, draw your signature with a finger or mouse, or upload a photo of your signature on paper.
  3. Pay. $3.95 per letter by card, through Stripe. No account, no subscription.
  4. We print and post. Your letter is printed, folded into a window envelope and handed to Australia Post, usually within 1 to 2 business days. You get an order page where you can check its status.

Prefer to post it yourself? At the last step you can download the finished letter as a PDF for free instead of paying. Print it, fold it into a DL window envelope so the address shows through, add a stamp and drop it in a post box.

Who you can send a letter to

Any person or organisation with a postal address in Australia. Common letters people send with us include:

  • Businesses: complaints, cancellations, refund requests, and anything a company says must be "in writing".
  • Councils: barking dogs, missed bins, trees, noise and footpaths. See our council complaint letter templates.
  • Landlords and agents: repair requests, notices and bond questions, with a dated copy for your records.
  • Schools: letters to a principal, teacher or school board.
  • Family and friends: a birthday letter, a thank-you, or news for someone who doesn't use email.
  • Politicians: your local member, a senator, a minister or the Prime Minister. Our guides cover how to write a letter to your local member and writing to the Prime Minister, and our directory has the office address for every member of every Australian parliament.

We post within Australia only, so the recipient needs an Australian postal address. PO Boxes and Locked Bags are fine.

Is it cheaper to post it yourself?

Often, yes, if you already have the things you need at home. Here's a fair comparison for one letter:

Doing it yourselfCost
Stamp (Australia Post basic postage for a small letter, from 1 September 2026)$0.02
EnvelopeA few cents from a box, more if you buy one at a time
PrintingPaper and ink at home, or a per-page fee at a library, newsagent or print shop
The tripGetting to a printer, the post office or a post box, if you need to

If you have a printer, paper and envelopes at home and a post box nearby, posting it yourself will usually cost less in cash than $3.95. That's why the PDF download is free. What you pay us for is the time and hassle: no printing, no hunting for an envelope or stamp, and no trip out. Check current stamp prices on Australia Post's regular letters page.

No printer? No problem

Plenty of households no longer own a printer, and printing a single page can mean a trip to the library or a print shop. With Better Letters the printing happens at our end. You can write and send the whole letter from your phone.

It also helps when you're away from home, travelling, unwell, or can't easily get to a post office. The letter still arrives from you, with your name, return address and signature on it.

Signatures: type, draw or upload

A signed letter looks and feels more personal. You have three ways to sign:

  • Type it. Enter your name and choose a script font that looks like handwriting.
  • Draw it. Sign with your finger on a phone or tablet, or with a mouse or trackpad.
  • Upload it. Sign a piece of white paper, take a photo, and upload it. We clean up the background so only the ink shows.

Your signature is printed on the letter above your typed name, and the sign-off ("Yours sincerely") is added for you. You can also send a letter without a signature if you prefer.

Privacy: encrypted, deleted after 24 hours, no account

Letters are often personal, so we keep as little as we can, for as short a time as we can:

  • Everything travels over an encrypted connection (HTTPS).
  • Your letter, signature and street addresses are encrypted in our database.
  • They are used once, to print and post your letter.
  • Letter content, signatures and street addresses are permanently deleted 24 hours after your letter is posted.
  • There's no account to create, so there's no password to leak and no profile building up over time.

Read the full privacy policy for the details.

Delivery times

There are two parts to how long your letter takes:

  1. Printing and lodging: we usually hand your letter to Australia Post within 1 to 2 business days.
  2. Australia Post delivery: Australia Post says its regular letter service generally takes 3 to 7 business days. Its delivery speeds page gives estimates of 3 to 5 business days within the same state and 4 to 7 business days interstate, noting that actual times depend on where the letter is posted from and to.

Australia Post now delivers regular letters to each address every second business day, and it notes that some letters may arrive sooner while it rolls out delivery changes through to the end of 2026. If your letter has a deadline, such as a notice period, allow plenty of time and check the latest estimates on auspost.com.au.

Better Letters vs other online post services

Several Australian services will print and post a letter for you, and they suit different needs. Broadly, there are two kinds:

  • Business mail services are built for companies sending invoices, statements or marketing in bulk. They usually need an account, and many connect to accounting software or an API.
  • Upload-and-post services let you upload a finished PDF or Word file, which they print and post.

Better Letters is built for one-off letters from individuals. You write in the browser (no Word or PDF needed), sign on screen, pay a flat $3.95 with no account, and your letter is deleted 24 hours after posting. If you need to send thousands of invoices a month, a business mail service is probably a better fit. If you need to send one letter today, we're designed for that.

I would be grateful if you could do this within 14 days of the date of this letter.

You can reach me on 0400 000 000, or by post at the address above. Thank you for your time.

Personal letter to family or a friend

Dear Nan,

I hope this letter finds you well. I have been meaning to write since your birthday and thought a proper letter would be nicer than a text.

We have had a busy few months. The kids started swimming lessons and Sam finally lost that front tooth. The garden is coming along too, and the lemon tree you gave us is covered in fruit.

How is the new unit? I hope the neighbours are friendly and that your knee is feeling better.

We would love to visit over the school holidays if that suits you.

Tips for a formal letter: put a clear subject line under the greeting, include any account or reference numbers, stick to one issue, say exactly what you want the reader to do, and give a reasonable date to reply by.
