The Prime Minister's postal address, how to address the letter, what to include, and whether you'll get a reply. Write online and we'll print and post it.
Updated 25 September 2026
Anyone in Australia can write to the Prime Minister, and a posted letter is still one of the most direct ways to do it. The current Prime Minister is Anthony Albanese. Below is the correct postal address, how to address the envelope, what to write, and what the Prime Minister's office says happens to your letter once it arrives.
The Prime Minister's postal address
For letters about national issues, write to the Prime Minister at Parliament House in Canberra. This is the address the Prime Minister's office publishes on pm.gov.au.
The Hon Anthony Albanese MP
Prime Minister
Parliament House
Canberra ACT 2600
Dear Prime Minister,
Parliament House or the electorate office: which should you use?
Like every member of the House of Representatives, the Prime Minister also represents a local electorate (Grayndler), and has an electorate office there. The two addresses do different jobs:
- Parliament House is for letters to the Prime Minister as Prime Minister: national policy, government decisions, anything that affects the country as a whole. This is the right choice for almost everyone.
- The electorate office is for constituents who live in the PM's own seat, writing to them as their local member about local issues or help with a government agency.

Marrickville NSW 2204
Dear Prime Minister,
Constituents can open this address in the editor from Anthony Albanese's page.
How to address a letter to the Prime Minister
On the envelope and at the top of the letter, write the Prime Minister's title and name, then “Prime Minister” on the next line:
- Envelope: The Hon Anthony Albanese MP, Prime Minister
- Salutation: Dear Prime Minister
Prime Ministers are “The Honourable” (“The Hon” for short) because they're ministers, and they keep the title for life. You don't use “The Hon” in the greeting, and Australian prime ministers are not “Right Honourable”. For every other office holder, see our guide on how to address a letter to an MP.
What to write
The Prime Minister's office receives a very large volume of mail, so a clear, short letter has the best chance of being understood and routed to the right person.
- Keep it to one page and one issue. If you have several concerns, send separate letters.
- Say who you are and where you live. Your suburb and state give context, and your full address lets the office reply.
- Explain why it matters to you. A few sentences about how the issue affects your life are more persuasive than general arguments the PM has heard many times.
- Make one clear ask. What do you want the Government to do? Be as specific as you can.
- End with a question. “Will you commit to…?” gives the office something to answer, rather than simply noting your view.
- Stay polite. Your letter will be read by staff first. Firm and respectful is far more effective than angry.
Letter to the Prime Minister: template
Dear Prime Minister,
My name is [your name], and I live in [your suburb] ([postcode]). I am writing to ask you to [one clear request, e.g. commit to ___, change ___, or intervene in ___].
This matters to me because [explain in two or three sentences how the issue affects you, your family, your work or your community].
[Optional: one fact, figure or example that supports your point, with its source.]
I understand the Government is responsible for many issues at once. I am asking you, as Prime Minister, to [repeat your request, as specifically as you can].
Will you [your question, phrased so it can be answered, e.g. "commit to ___ before the next Budget"]? I would be grateful for a reply to the address above.
Will the Prime Minister read it?
Be realistic: the Prime Minister won't personally read most letters. Correspondence is handled by staff in the Prime Minister's office, who read it, record it and decide what happens next. The official contact page says the office reads and considers all correspondence, but that not every item receives a response. It also says your message may be better considered by a federal minister or a state government, and may be passed on to them.
That means a letter to the PM about, say, a hospital waiting list may be forwarded to the federal health minister or to your state government. If you already know which minister is responsible, writing to them directly can save a step. The pm.gov.au page doesn't give a response time, so we won't guess one either.
Letter, email or the online contact form?
The Prime Minister's office accepts messages through the online form on pm.gov.au as well as by post. Each has its strengths:
- The online form is free and instant, and suits a short message.
- A posted letter is a signed, physical record with your return address, and it's the channel pm.gov.au itself points to for sensitive matters, because it notes the internet and email aren't secure. It's also the better choice if you want to include a copy of a document.
You can post it yourself (write it in our editor, download the PDF free, and use a $0.02 stamp) or have us print and post it for $3.95, with no account needed. Letters are encrypted and deleted 24 hours after posting.
Writing to the Deputy PM, a minister or the Leader of the Opposition instead
The Prime Minister isn't always the best person to write to. Depending on your issue, one of these may get your letter to a decision-maker faster:
- The minister responsible for the portfolio your issue falls in. For example, our list of every federal and state health minister shows you can write to the relevant minister instead, at the right level of government.
- The Deputy Prime Minister (Richard Marles), who acts for the PM when they're away.
- The Leader of the Opposition (Angus Taylor), if you want the alternative government to take up your issue.
- Your own local member, who can pass your letter to the PM or a minister with a covering note. See how to write to your MP.
| Parliament | Name | Role | Office mailing address |
